Service

Handwritten cards, sent for you

Short, warm and kept. A handwritten card gets propped up on a desk for a fortnight, which is a fortnight more attention than any email you will ever send.

A handwritten card service writes short personal messages onto cards in bulk with a real pen — thank-you notes, welcome cards, milestone messages and invitations — so a business can send them at a volume no individual could keep up with by hand.

What businesses send

Thank you

After a first order, a renewal, a referral or a large purchase. The highest-value card in the set, and the one most businesses never get around to sending.

Welcome

A new client, member or patient. Arriving in week one, when the relationship is still being decided.

Milestones

Anniversaries of joining, of settlement, of a first purchase. Trivially easy to trigger from a database, and almost nobody does it.

Reactivation

Someone who stopped. A card asking whether everything is alright outperforms a discount code, and costs a lot less than the margin you were about to give away.

Invitations

Events, openings, briefings. A written invitation reads as selective, which is usually the point of the event.

Apologies

When something went wrong. A written apology is one of the few gestures that cannot be faked cheaply, which is exactly why it works.

Write less than you want to

The most common mistake on a card is treating it like a letter. A card that is full to the edges reads as a marketing message that ran out of room. A card with three lines and a signature reads as a person who took thirty seconds.

The other mistake is a call to action. A thank-you card that ends with “book your next appointment online” is not a thank-you card; it is an ad, and the reader knows it immediately. Let it be what it says it is. The commercial return comes from that restraint, not in spite of it.

Questions about handwritten cards

How many words fit on a card?

Between 25 and 70 is the sweet spot for an A6 card. Much beyond that and the writing crowds the space, which undermines the whole impression. If you need 150 words, send a letter instead.

Can we use our own printed cards?

Yes. Send us your stock and we write on it. Uncoated is essential — a ballpoint skates across a gloss or aqueous-coated card and the result looks wrong.

Can you send cards in batches as orders come in?

Batching is how most ongoing card programmes work — a weekly or fortnightly run against whatever your system has produced since the last one. Tell us your expected volume per batch and we will quote it that way rather than as a one-off.

Do you supply the envelopes?

Yes, and we would strongly suggest handwriting them too. A handwritten card in a printed, labelled envelope loses most of its effect before anyone sees the card.

What is the minimum card order?

100 cards, which can be a single batch or the first of a recurring programme.

Set up a card programme

Most card work is ongoing rather than one-off — a batch a week against whatever your system produced. Tell us the trigger and the rough volume and we will price it as a programme.
