Handwritten letters in bulk
One handwritten letter is a nice gesture. Twenty thousand is a logistics problem — data, proofing, consistency, batching, lodgement and a cost per piece that has to come down as the volume goes up. This page is about that problem.
Bulk handwritten letters are handwritten mail produced at campaign scale — typically 1,000 to 50,000 pieces — using writing machines rather than people, with the data preparation, proofing and lodgement handled as part of the job.
What changes as the number grows
The data becomes the hard part
At 250 pieces you can eyeball the file. At 20,000 you cannot, and the errors in it are guaranteed rather than possible. Duplicates, missing postcodes, business names in the first-name column, and people who have already told you to stop writing to them.
Per-piece cost falls sharply
Setup is amortised across the run and volume tiers apply. A 120-word letter with a handwritten envelope is $3.94 per piece at 250, and $2.94 at 20,000 — a 25% reduction. Setup is waived entirely from 5,000 pieces.
Postage starts to dominate
Above a few thousand pieces, postage is frequently the largest single line in the campaign — larger than the writing. That is when bulk lodgement options stop being a detail and start being the decision.
Release timing matters
Everything landing in one week produces a response spike. Waves smooth it, and give you the option to change the letter after the first result.

Questions about bulk campaigns
What is the largest campaign you will quote?
The calculator covers up to 50,000 pieces. Above that we still want to hear from you — it just becomes a scheduling conversation as much as a pricing one, so it needs a person rather than a slider.
Does the handwriting stay consistent across twenty thousand pieces?
It stays consistent in style and inconsistent in detail, which is what you want. The same hand throughout, with the natural piece-to-piece variation that stops a run looking mechanical. What we control tightly is pen pressure and ink flow, because a run that fades halfway is immediately obvious.
Can a large campaign be released in waves?
Yes, and for anything that generates inbound calls you should. Landing 20,000 letters in one week produces a spike your phones may not survive. Splitting into weekly waves also lets you change the message if the first wave underperforms.
Do we get cheaper postage at volume?
Potentially. Australia Post offers bulk lodgement discounts from 300 articles, Promo Post from 4,000 barcoded letters, and Charity Mail for endorsed DGRs from 300 items. Which one applies depends on your format, your barcoding and your organisation, and it is worth checking before you finalise the piece.
What happens to duplicate or bad addresses?
We de-duplicate and validate the file before writing, and report back what we found. You are not charged for pieces we do not write. Sending two identical handwritten letters to the same person is worse than sending none.
